The ASPLUND SNOW series celebrates 30 years
A MODERN DESIGN CLASSIC

It’s easy to identify furniture classics from the middle of the last century, but considerably more difficult to decide when more recent designs have become classics. The Snow series by ASPLUND has managed to defy this by becoming something very few furniture series can ever hope for; a modern classic in its own time.

The journey began in Norrland, on the border of Lappland, where snow covers the ground for 150-200 days a year, making it the most common type of weather. The name of this furniture series, inspired by the snow itself, feels as natural as the material it’s made from.

SNOW started life in 1994 as a brief by the entrepreneur Björn Sandell to create a well designed quality furniture series that could provide employment for the company Forminord, located near the Artic Circle. The task fell to Jonas Bohlin and Thomas Sandell, two young creatives from a new generation, embracing traditional Swedish design elements while also having an international outlook – and injecting a fresh sense of humor into their designs. The SNOW series was purposely simple and the cutout handles provided the only decorative element, while also being functional by providing a comfortable grip.

SNOW IN FALU-RED

As we approached the anniversary and reflected on the design and why SNOW holds such a special place in people’s hearts, we repeatedly came back to Dalarna and our Swedish design and interior heritage. A major inspiration has of course been Carl and Karin Larsson, where Karin’s interior design was captured in paintings that were early on printed as graphic art pieces and hung in many Swedish homes, thus becoming models for the functional and aesthetic Swedish ‘folkhem’ – a kind of precursor to today’s interior design magazines.

We thought of the fantastic historical village of Tällberg by Lake Siljan, where time seems to have stood still, and Hotell Villa Långbers, which has beautifully and respectfully preserved our Swedish cultural heritage through a perfect combination of old and new. Here, we let the classic Faul-red color, which is actually one of the original colors, symbolize SNOW’s history as a functional furniture icon that carries into the future, regardless of which color or model one chooses.

MADE IN SWEDEN

SNOW is currently manufactured in a factory located 20 km south of a small village called Snöbyn (“Snow Village”) in the Dalecarlia region of Sweden. The production process is fully optimized for material efficiency, minimizing waste by utilizing almost the entire MDF+ board, with only the holes for the handles and some sanding dust left unused.

Today, the SNOW pieces are more beloved than ever-not only for their high-level design but also for their functionality and quality. The series includes 13 models in nine different colors.

What we at ASPLUND find particularly exciting is that over the past decade, SNOW has started to be passed down to the next generation and can now be found in esteemed auction houses across Sweden, with values appreciating beyond standard indexes. A true Swedish classic.
